Reds Hit Five! (May 23, 2009)
Falkirk Reds v Airdrie United Cosmos
Saturday 23rd May 09
10.30am kick off

Falkirk Reds had a full squad available to them today as they faced the newly renamed Airdrie United.  Neither team had managed to get any points so far this season so they knew it would be a close match.

The Reds got off the the best possible start as after 2 minutes Louise floated in an inch-perfect corner and striker Katie headed it home! 1-0!  Falkirk had their heads up but Airdrie had other thoughts and within 2 minutes had equalised when poor clearances saw Airdrie back level, 1-1!

Within minutes Falkirk were 2-1 down as the referee failed to call for an offside against Airdrie and the player scored.  Now Falkirk were getting very frustrated and panicking on the ball and it got worse when again failure to simply head the ball away saw the Airdrie winger skip down the wing and strike the ball home between keeper Lorraine and her near post. 3-1!

The Reds were in complete disarray and only 15 minutes had been played.  Making it even worse Airdrie again capitalised on poor defending and made it 4-1!

But suddenly the home side seem to waken up and a long ball through beat the defence and Katie drove with the ball, holding off two defenders and fired the ball left-footed across the goalie and in at the far post! 4-2!  Heads back up Falkirk had two or three quick chances with both Louise and Katie breaking through but unable to finish the chances.

Falkirk then had another corner and Louise played in a great ball on top of the goalie who panicked and put the ball into her own net, 4-3.

Half-time came quickly and the home team knew that they were back in control of the match and the run of the game was on their side.  They came out strong and early on Lorriane sent the ball over the half-way line and a poor header from the Airdrie goalie played the ball into Louise's path who went on and slotted it past the goalie, 4-4!

Now Airdrie were on the back foot and Falkirk pushed again and after confusion in the Airdrie defence Gayle put the ball away and Falkirk were once again in the lead, 5-4!  But now Airdrie started to push again and Lorraine had to pull off a couple of excellent saves.  Then Aimee got a knock on her bad knee and had to come off, Jillian had her foot stomped on and had to come off and finally Jade took a kick on her foot and was subbed.  These changes, 3 quickly in a row, saw the Falkirk team's rythmn broken and Airdrie took advantage.

Errors again started to creep into Falkirk as they stopped winning the ball in the air and clearing simple balls and Airdrie captialised scoring 3 goals to lead 5-7!  But Falkirk kept battling and forced the Aidrie keeper to make a few great saves at the end as Laura, then Gayle, then Alice had 1 on 1 chances with the goalie but failed to convert.

The match ended 5-7 but the girls put in a great performance, frustrating that we could score 5 goals and still lose, but pleased that we have started to score from our set pieces and can come back from big deficits!

Team: Lorraine, Emma, Jade, Sophie, Jillian, Laura, Lisa, Alice, Louise, Gayle, Katie, Aimee, Lauren, Hayley
