U-13s Defeated by Dumfries (March 14, 2009) The U13s travelled down to Dumfries for the first round of the Scottish Cup today and with their opponenets finishing second in their league last season, beaten only be Hamilton, we knew it was going to be a tough game. However it was Falkirk who played the better football for the first 15 mins. Dumfries had a couple of chances which were dealt with by Mel and Stef in defence.From a Dumfries attack Shalana won the ball back in her own box and played a great ball through to Rachel who passed onto Colette to neatly slot the ball past their keeper. 0 -1 Although Falkirk looked the stronger in attack Dumfries were powerful on the break and their striker showed great strength and skill on the ball.When their striker was through on goal with only Laura to beat, Rachel tracked back and made a superb tackle to prevent the shot. From the resultant corner Laura managed to get a fingertip to it pushing it onto the bar and over. It was end to end stuff at this point and after a great run and shot by Rachel the keeper dropped it and Colette was on hand to finish it off 0 - 2 Dumfries came back fighting and within 2 mins had scored to make it 1 - 2 and minutes later were awarded a penalty for handball by Stef. The penalty gave Laura no chance and levelled the score 2 - 2 Falkirk seemed to switch off again and Dumfries scored just before half time 3 - 2 With only a goal between the teams it was Dumfries who came out the stronger in the second half and extended their lead to 4 - 2 . Shalana won a penalty when she was fouled in the box and Rachel stepped up to take it but hit it over the bar. At this point Jas came on for Keira and had a couple of chances but again it was Dumfries who scored 5 - 2. When Colette took a knock she was replaced by Carly and 10 mins before the final whistle Rachel pulled one back after a superb strike 5 - 3. Rachel came off mins later and was replaced by Colette. Final Score: Dumfries 5 - 3 Falkirk Scorers: Colette(2), Rachel Squad: Laura, Stef, Mel, Rachel, Keira(Jas), Shalana, Colette( Carly) Subs not used: Caity, Cherise Overall a very close game in which Dumfries never gave up and took their chances. However all the girls put on a great display and should be proud of themselves. Mel had another outstanding game in defence and Keira was strong in an unfamiliar position of centre mid.Laura proved herself again with some brilliant saves and Rachel worked tirelessly throughout the game. Colette shot with her usual accuracy and Jas gave their defence a hard time. Carly fought hard for everything in midfield and is improving with every game. Caity and Cherise unfortunately did not get playing time today as the game was so close but they are both playing in an U-11 tournament at Forthbank tomorrow along with Jas and I'm sure they will all benefit from playing against girls of their own age rather than 2 years older.
