“Battling Bairns Deserved The Win”

After the shambles of last Sunday’s game on, game off, at Cowdenbeath it was important for the ladies to establish a winning mentality at the expense of today’s visitors, Hutchie Vale.  It was also a chance of revenge for the coaching team as they lost both these fixtures last season.

Only Keeper Natalie Williamson was unavailable for selection today due to Illness so Natalya Machola kept her place in the starting 11.  Playing in a normal 4-4-2 formation the game kicked off on the excellent synthetic surface in Alloa………….

Minute by Minute (Falkirk In Blue)…..

5min – A sweeping move forward from Hutchie Vale saw their midfield and front line link well but the Falkirk defence stood strong and the chance was gone.

8min – Laura Yuill found space in the penalty area but her shot was well blocked by the home defence and the chance was gone.

16min – A Falkirk corner from the right was swung to the near post where it met the head of Maxine Thornton however the ball drifted by the far post.

22min – Another corner to Falkirk on the right was played into the penalty area however there were no takers in a blue shirt.

24min – GOAL – A moment that Keeper Machola will want to forget as she mis-judged the bounce of the ball and watched in horror as she failed to collect a harmless ball into the penalty area and left the striker with an open goal to score (0-1).

26min – A sickening clash of heads between Arlene Livingston and her midfield counterpart from Hutchie Vale saw both players lay monition less on the pitch for around 20 minutes while an ambulance was called – thankfully both players were okay after being checked out.

Sub – Arlene Livingston (off) – Nicole Letford (on)

32min – Another Falkirk corner was played into the penalty area however Hutchie managed to deal with the pressure and clear their line.

37min – GOAL – Emma ‘Kirky’ Lyons played a perfect corner cross into the penalty area and Maxine Thornton made better use of her header to find the back of the net and level the match – much deserved as Falkirk had been the better side (1-1).

40min – Kerry Graham had a great chance to give Falkirk the lead 3 minutes later however the wee striker failed to get over the ball and fired high over the bar.

Half-Time:- Falkirk Ladies (1) V (1) Hutchie Vale Ladies.

Half-Time Chat…….Both Coaches Wilson and Thomson were delighted that the squad had shown the fighting spirit to get back into the game after being a goal down, which was very much against the run off play.  With Falkirk being the better side and enjoying most of the play the coaches were confident that a victory was on the cards.

Sub – Laura Yuill (off) – Sheryl Gallagher (on)

49min – GOAL – The Falkirk left side had been causing concern to the Hutchie back-line and it was no surprise to see Ashley McDonald race away and then cut into the box and her fine shot whizzed by the keeper and into the back of the net to give the bairns the lead (2-1).

55min - Hutchie managed to come into the game a little more and after winning a free-kick on the edge of the box their resulting shot was blocked however a foul was committed on the keeper and the chance was gone.

60min – A corner to Hutchie was played into the Falkirk box however the defence stood strong and cleared their lines.

74min – A cross from the right from Jenny Godfrey found its way to the back post where Ashley McDonald’s neat touch and shot saw the ball drift narrowly wide of goal.

76min – Jennifer Godfrey was next to test the visiting keeper but her shot went over the bar.

81min – Falkirk had the bulk of the possession and Nicole Letford, first half substitute, advanced forward towards goal and her shot, which was hit with plenty power, drifted wide.

88min – Another Falkirk corner in the dying minutes failed to find a blue shirt and the chance was gone.

Full-Time:- Falkirk Ladies (2) V (1) Hutchie Vale Ladies.

Coach Wilson Synopsis:-

The squad showed a great fighting spirit today and for long periods in the game had total control over events.  We did lose a goal against the run off play midway in the first half but the players showed the determination to eventually win the game.

Individual performances of note fall to Nicky Docherty and Ashley McDonald down the left flank, Kerry Graham in attack and Maxine Thornton at the heart of the defence.  Collectively the squad played well today however a minor criticism may be the final ball in the final third of the field which let us down a little.

Next Sunday provides the squad with a rest from league action and a Scottish Cup tie with Monifeith Ladies.  The 2nd division side are sitting mid-table but should not be taken lightly as they will be up for the challenge of facing a 1st division side.

This will also provide the coaches with the opportunity to rest a few bodies and play some players who are in need of game time.
