1st Trophy of the Season (August 12, 2007)
The Falkirk Girls Under-15 Red Team continued their pre-season preparation with a bang as they won the Broxburn Invitational Tournament today (12th August).
This was only the second time any of the girls had played 11-a-side football and what a way to gain more experience. The competition was played in the format of a round-robin between 4 teams and Falkirk were paired with hosts Broxburn for the first match. The girls had a nervous start and lost an early goal but left-midfielder Dion McCusker drew the team level minutes later with a shot across the keeper. Falkirk then piled on the pressure and should have added to their tally but Broxburn fought back and struck on the counter-attack. 2-1 down but not deserving to be, the Falkirk team again drove forward and striker Robyn Graham finally got the breakthrough just before full-time. First game 2-2.
Falkirk now faced Cowdenbeath who had already lost their first match 1-0 and right from the start the girls played some slick passing football which led to three quick goals, all from hat-trick heroine Susie Malloy. She took all 3 goals well and gave the team an unattainable lead so when Cowdenbeath scored late on the game was already won. Second game 3-1.
The final game against Musselburgh Windsor would decide the champions and with the opposition having won their first 2 matches they only needed a draw whereas Falkirk needed the win. A few positional changes were made by the two coaches Alison Mackie & Annmarie Blyth as the heat and 2 tough games had taken their toll on the Falkirk Girls. But again the determination and footballing skills allowed winger Dion to get her second goal of the day from a great individual run. Soon after Dion again was at the heart of the second goal when she crossed the ball from the left and Megan McClure slotted it away at the back post. With a 2-0 lead the Falkirk team started to get a bit nervous and allowed Musselburgh back in and with 4 minutes to go they scored! But thanks to some fantastic goalkeeping from Ellise Mitchell and strong defending the girls held on to a 2-1 victory.
This was a brilliant and confidence boosting win for the team which is one of 2 teams that Falkirk have at this age group this season. Every player is improving each time they step on the pitch and they are learning to adapt to the full-size game very quickly.
WELL DONE!!!!
